Whal Fulure for Higher Educalion?
Whal Fulure for Higher Educalion?
With all this change, the pattern of undergraduate education is certain to be transformed. The question still to be decided is whether the change will be liberal or reactionary. On the one hand, there are powerful arguments in favour of a more liberal start to undergraduate education at the universities, partly so as to provide a better foundation for specialized or vocational studies coming later and partly so as to make less sharp the need to choose between one course of specialist studies and another. Among university scientists at Cambridge last week, some development along these lines seems to have been considered inevitable. The difficulty is to know what form a more liberal undergraduate curriculum should take. There is much to be said for the simple abolition of undergraduate courses in subjects too narrow to be taught with integrity. Evidently undergraduate courses in microbiology are to be deplored on educational grounds. So too are biochemistry and even metallurgy. There is also much to be said for the several proposals recently put forward to show how undergraduate teaching might consist of a period of more general study followed by a period of special or vocational study. Professor A. B. Pippard's scheme for two years of general work (with some specialism on the side for those who want it) leading to a degree has been usually attacked for the wrong reasons. The truth is that some device like this. that will allow young people an opportunity to use the first university degree as a stepping stone to something qualitatively different, is essential if some means of satisfying the volatile and unpredictable demands of the labour market is to be found. But that is only one of the many reasons why the Pippard proposals deserve serious attention
