Towards Accelerating Intrusion Detection

) C) I' K. O& u In the current paper, we present our work towards , P/ d+ _7 C+ y, P3 B
accelerating intrusion detection operations at the edge network
4 ]$ V% u) B* ^ g! _using FPGAs. Cloud computing and network function . w" J% [2 j2 S5 m( [- ?/ ^9 v& A" M
virtualization have led to a new appealing paradigm for service & o" D2 y ~% `
delivery and management. Unfortunately, this paradigm fails ' c8 w k( u9 Z
to correctly support IoT applications and services that seek
8 |4 k/ h% j# T$ ^+ ?9 fbetter communication platforms. Security as a Service can also 6 j5 G: Q2 x3 Q8 y
be seen as a cloud-based model that needs to be accommodated
4 p; x( Y T0 G w, @to fulfill these services requirements. Again, one of the main % i9 h7 f1 a, t' {1 {. ~5 Z' \( j
issues to be addressed in this context is how to improve the 2 _ X4 g- @6 K4 m% }" Q5 \
performance of such systems or services in order to make them
% q7 e H& n m! mcapable of coping with the huge amount of data while - b) {0 \- M" ~9 H( ^; r& i9 h" l
remaining reliable. A potential solution is the FPGA based
9 c D) V' O1 }6 Ledge computing, which is a powerful combination offering
3 A# n7 @" K* W# Z; ?& QFPGA acceleration capabilities together with edge and fog : l0 i3 j% N, M2 W( u
benefits. Indeed, our work focusses on devising an Intrusion 3 d) R, i$ B1 X! g7 H r7 f
Prevention architecture called FORTISEC (40SEC), that is & W* Z, w2 r3 M. m7 A' |# s2 j
meant to operate in a completely softwarized as well as in an 7 V* Q- o8 O4 J6 i! a
FPGA mode. Thereby, we present suitable algorithms, design $ c* j5 E2 s0 ]0 k: }
principles and well defined components towards the ; j1 I9 k1 N/ }
implementation of accelerated intrusion prevention on the 4 e1 a! y, n5 \+ z0 F
edge. We also present a testbed being utilized for the - s0 D% ?/ v8 W7 T/ G' d' R1 R( e
implementation of 40SEC and its performance testing.
