Towards Accelerating Intrusion Detection

In the current paper, we present our work towards
' l* E; f& s* k" y' [accelerating intrusion detection operations at the edge network
5 s8 z7 _# c6 Pusing FPGAs. Cloud computing and network function
& k+ m  Z, J4 h) uvirtualization have led to a new appealing paradigm for service
) o5 m" n0 b4 `6 D* s, f- Xdelivery and management. Unfortunately, this paradigm fails
) K; ~- u) P3 F0 \& k' q' Cto correctly support IoT applications and services that seek ! }6 H- i" c, F% m$ d, `2 _  ~
better communication platforms. Security as a Service can also : X6 h5 c& D3 [6 s' x
be seen as a cloud-based model that needs to be accommodated
0 Q2 M, C1 V( R3 [% c6 R% dto fulfill these services requirements. Again, one of the main $ q& y6 K9 @) G# G& X+ g
issues to be addressed in this context is how to improve the * \  E( v& A, ?
performance of such systems or services in order to make them - ?, u; S& h( e) S5 Z, ]8 b
capable of coping with the huge amount of data while . e3 k: j& g; j. T8 R/ v
remaining reliable. A potential solution is the FPGA based
7 z+ \1 e6 M7 G% H7 O  V, ~edge computing, which is a powerful combination offering . h. X3 }/ B3 A" s& C
FPGA acceleration capabilities together with edge and fog % M8 V% m- ~! J; _1 Y) z
benefits. Indeed, our work focusses on devising an Intrusion $ ^. g  ?& v2 B$ V% ^8 n
Prevention architecture called FORTISEC (40SEC), that is , K; q9 |$ C8 p7 q& [9 o. A7 w
meant to operate in a completely softwarized as well as in an 3 @5 H0 R2 m5 |! Q  o7 n
FPGA mode. Thereby, we present suitable algorithms, design
+ K5 ^( P: A" v, uprinciples and well defined components towards the
! p% E3 H* a6 x+ r6 S# t9 G9 Aimplementation of accelerated intrusion prevention on the # l1 B: a' W+ q2 |5 ~4 Q2 W( }
edge. We also present a testbed being utilized for the   `" F, c4 F0 r' x
implementation of 40SEC and its performance testing. 7 |% H2 I$ y" s/ \; \' w
