Towards Accelerating Intrusion Detection

In the current paper, we present our work towards
t, b( ?* I5 a" ?accelerating intrusion detection operations at the edge network
3 c; P6 c: ?( _. wusing FPGAs. Cloud computing and network function ' n; G/ v7 H+ Z5 ]6 A, S* K$ O
virtualization have led to a new appealing paradigm for service
3 I7 d9 F. f# Mdelivery and management. Unfortunately, this paradigm fails
5 P% L( o, T- o* o/ g) Rto correctly support IoT applications and services that seek
" s8 P/ j- ^2 C) G2 Sbetter communication platforms. Security as a Service can also % h0 C8 @* ^; C, M d
be seen as a cloud-based model that needs to be accommodated 8 [1 L/ v2 a( a; p. c
to fulfill these services requirements. Again, one of the main
6 m/ U8 {, F0 e: c c9 }; hissues to be addressed in this context is how to improve the $ }) n- P( M8 L* Z' n% h; u5 y
performance of such systems or services in order to make them
# u" L( H) @1 @& R; V( _capable of coping with the huge amount of data while
4 k+ {0 j' t8 p; `, Premaining reliable. A potential solution is the FPGA based
2 _" s) m p k" x2 o, \" T4 Eedge computing, which is a powerful combination offering
! U- h$ s, K- _: GFPGA acceleration capabilities together with edge and fog ( r) q. h% E( ~- P T/ q7 f+ O
benefits. Indeed, our work focusses on devising an Intrusion
/ g# `* G3 F. L1 f2 y, VPrevention architecture called FORTISEC (40SEC), that is 3 \; {3 A# y: T- E
meant to operate in a completely softwarized as well as in an
2 T! g9 G7 `; ZFPGA mode. Thereby, we present suitable algorithms, design 1 P' N# c& C1 O( s$ N7 i& H/ ^
principles and well defined components towards the
) b- T9 v+ g: q4 H* [% Kimplementation of accelerated intrusion prevention on the
1 e9 E" C# ^4 P. Vedge. We also present a testbed being utilized for the 6 f0 B& P5 J- L( z* V2 B
implementation of 40SEC and its performance testing. ) b* B! M& _5 Z h
