Towards Accelerating Intrusion Detection

In the current paper, we present our work towards
) i0 O- C) o) B  _- Q! [accelerating intrusion detection operations at the edge network
/ u/ t) z! c2 {0 ]using FPGAs. Cloud computing and network function   _% g2 o! s% g' O
virtualization have led to a new appealing paradigm for service / J( j4 G! A4 z7 H/ p( L( ^7 r
delivery and management. Unfortunately, this paradigm fails   N7 H% Z$ w: K/ N: @! k$ U
to correctly support IoT applications and services that seek
. P: c5 x8 e2 q; x: kbetter communication platforms. Security as a Service can also
5 I6 R- ], v  d4 \be seen as a cloud-based model that needs to be accommodated
. o- ^8 ?9 x7 j- A0 A# Yto fulfill these services requirements. Again, one of the main
4 ]3 \9 s/ U7 K7 aissues to be addressed in this context is how to improve the + s$ [- R, x, b8 n. N+ l* p
performance of such systems or services in order to make them
! u  O. E  y& K! W( y; A% d/ k% |capable of coping with the huge amount of data while
) a% x& N; \9 V7 S& a' m  Premaining reliable. A potential solution is the FPGA based % E  `+ ~" m+ @  M' b
edge computing, which is a powerful combination offering * Y& Q- @7 W: ?2 F
FPGA acceleration capabilities together with edge and fog
: N; y# Y7 Z4 _% d9 h$ d- Lbenefits. Indeed, our work focusses on devising an Intrusion . u: S0 \, }6 p6 h& k7 \
Prevention architecture called FORTISEC (40SEC), that is
! E# ?* I; q+ L" {" ameant to operate in a completely softwarized as well as in an
2 T7 E& _3 t# ~* N" M0 lFPGA mode. Thereby, we present suitable algorithms, design
" J7 X. A4 G1 P% d( kprinciples and well defined components towards the / X3 @+ v) ?& ^, q0 G! Q& H! H
implementation of accelerated intrusion prevention on the
, b5 z( j7 ~7 I7 A" [edge. We also present a testbed being utilized for the ! }, j" C; W9 P! b, d/ B7 w( I& E
implementation of 40SEC and its performance testing.
