Towards Accelerating Intrusion Detection

accelerating intrusion detection operations at the edge network $ j$ h9 c$ G+ E6 [+ A& {) E5 p. r
using FPGAs. Cloud computing and network function . T' Q, C, [  s2 b1 j
virtualization have led to a new appealing paradigm for service ! H0 g8 t2 `1 _) Y! y
delivery and management. Unfortunately, this paradigm fails
$ `4 n) b7 m7 B  h  ^to correctly support IoT applications and services that seek 1 S8 N7 W. m+ S& p2 ]- Z
better communication platforms. Security as a Service can also
* R4 j& h1 ?3 z  A- Pbe seen as a cloud-based model that needs to be accommodated 5 j1 Y0 w& K4 s9 s9 O+ R" `' y
to fulfill these services requirements. Again, one of the main
' D* x# G- Q2 wissues to be addressed in this context is how to improve the 4 C/ E4 b, F$ a  \% J
performance of such systems or services in order to make them . E  K. U  U! r3 y+ M
capable of coping with the huge amount of data while
4 @+ Q6 D$ S9 Q9 g4 |, M& mremaining reliable. A potential solution is the FPGA based
3 w1 w0 u% e1 Sedge computing, which is a powerful combination offering - Z* I3 K( C, f3 _
FPGA acceleration capabilities together with edge and fog 2 y" N3 r4 I% o9 ~; X
benefits. Indeed, our work focusses on devising an Intrusion 3 D# s5 x& q# s. N! A, _. z5 J
Prevention architecture called FORTISEC (40SEC), that is
$ ^1 ?  @& @$ R8 i3 umeant to operate in a completely softwarized as well as in an ' n. s9 |+ ?9 R# h
FPGA mode. Thereby, we present suitable algorithms, design / D, U% u6 R% t# H' L
principles and well defined components towards the 2 |* C/ h4 Z. Z
implementation of accelerated intrusion prevention on the # _- z- s+ a! ]( s# T
edge. We also present a testbed being utilized for the 9 Y/ [% s% N( z
implementation of 40SEC and its performance testing. ' f, b, K. A1 P9 f( n
