A newbathtubcurvemodelwitha finitesupport

The failureratewithabathtubshapeusuallyincreasesveryfastinthewear-outphase.Inthiscase,the
bathtub curvemodelwitha finite supportcanbetteradaptthesharpchangeinfailurerate.Therearefew
models withthe finite support.Thispaperpresentssuchamodel.However,themaximumlikelihood
estimator ofthelocationparameterofsuchmodelssometimesconvergestothelargestobservationofa
dataset. Anextendedmaximumspacingmethodisdevelopedtoestimatetheparametersforthecase
where themaximumlikelihoodmethodfails.Threeexamplesareincludedtoillustratetheappropriate-
ness oftheproposedmodelandestimationmethod.
