Problem B: All-Terrain Camouflage(bk1)

Disruptive coloration is common inmilitary usage, for military vehicles. uniforms of soldiers and equipments.(bk1') Vision is the main sense of orientation inhumans, and the primary function of camouflage is to deceivethe human eye.(bk2) There exists a lot ofmilitary clothing camouflage patterns, to suitthe need to match combat clothing to special kinds of terrain (such aswoodland, snow, and desert).(bk3) Somecamouflage patterns have been designed for use in a wide range of conditions.(bk3') Please build a modelto analyze the low-visibility effect of various patterns, develop aquantitative camouflage effect evaluation methodand design an ideal camouflage textile pattern for most environments.(spm1s)

Analysis:

Shouldwe optimize a lot in this question? No! The emphasis of the problem contributesto evaluation function and the definition of the input quantity.

Let'sunderstand the problem as a function again:

Independent Variable: the so-calledcamouflage pattern is the decision variable included in the independentvariable of the function. If you understand is partly as a optimizationproblem, it is the decision variable. However, change of the environment is theone that we cannot control but important to the results, so it is the parameterin the optimization terms.

Dependent Variable: visibility effect,waiting to get the definition quantitatively and can be calculated easily.

Function: Evaluation of the camouflageeffect. In this sense, choose the point(s) appropriate to be the index ofevaluation scale it and add together to get the evaluation function. Also, thegeneration process of the evaluation function is also the one to get thedependent variable. In other words, For the vague object to be defined, the evaluationprocess of it is both the generation of evaluation function and the object.

In the end, the model asks for a littleoptimization. When parameters get all the possible value, which camouflagepattern is the best, it is simple and nature to use the mean value of allparameters to compare each pattern and get the best one in the end.

As I understand, the evaluation function ofa camouflage pattern to a certain environment is the core of the problem, so itis an evaluation problem. (The evaluation result differs with environment andtit is to say environment is the key parameter of the evaluation function) Ofcourse the design of the pattern is also of significance. It is important todistinguish the parameter and the decision variable of the input of thefunction. In the evaluating function, only the evaluating indices are decisionvariable and all others are parameters. It’s only a little part to optimize itwith the best pattern to all environments because it is so easy.
