    Problem A
    Problem: Roller Coaster
Click here to download the PDF version
There are several Roller Coasterrating/ranking sites online that, while taking some objective measures into account, heavily rely on subjective input to determine the rating or rankingof a particular roller coaster (e.g., an "excitement"or"experience" score of an "expert" rider to measure"thrill").

In addressing thisHiMCM problem, consider only roller coasters currently in operation. We haveprovided data for a subset of operating roller coasters whose height, speed,and/or drop are above the average of worldwide operating coasters. Therefore,we have not included family or kiddie coasters, nor have we included bobsled ormountain type coasters.

    1. Create anobjective quantitative algorithm or set of algorithms to develop a descriptiveroller coaster rating/ranking system based only on roller coaster numerical anddescriptive specification data (e.g., speed, duration of ride, steel or wood, drop).

    2. Use youralgorithm(s) to develop your "Top 10 Roller Coasters in the World"list. Compare and discuss the rating/ranking results and descriptions from yourteam's algorithm(s) with at least two other rating/ranking systems foundonline.

    3. Describe theconcept and design for a user-friendly app that uses your algorithm(s) to help apotential roller coaster rider find a roller coaster that she or he would wantto ride. NOTE: You DO NOT need to program and/or write code for the app. Youare developing the concept and design for the app only.

    4. Write aone-page non-technical News Release describing your new algorithm, results, and app.

    Your submissionshould consist of:
    • One-page Summary Sheet,
    • One-page NewsRelease,
    • Your solution ofno more than 30 pages, for a maximum of 32 pages with your summary and newsrelease.
    • Note: Referencelist and any appendices do not count toward the 32-page limit and should appearafter your completed solution.

Note: It is not uncommon for real world databases to have somemissing, noisy, or inconsistent data.

    Glossary:
app - an application; a small specializedprogram used on mobile electronic devices
news release - a statement prepared for release to thepublic or press
objective - based on measurable or observable facts
online - available by means of a computer over anetwork
subjective - based on personal opinions orperceptions

    Problem B
    Problem: Cozy Smart House
Click here to download the PDF version
No one wants to spend more money thannecessary on heating and air conditioning. But, everyone wants to becomfortable and cozy while at home. The development of programmable thermostatswas an initial effort to assist in reducing energy costs. With a programmablethermostat, you can manually preset a schedule of temperature increases anddecreases for weekdays and weekends, and day and night periods, to keep yourhome cool or warm when needed, but save energy when not needed. Any adjustmentto the schedule requires a manual change at each thermostat.

With theincreasing use of remote control systems and mobile apps, there are many home climate controlprograms that allow you to adjust your home heating and/or air conditioningsystems remotely using your smart phone or computer. With the first generationof these "smart home" systems you can adjust your heat system or airconditioner from anywhere (via a mobile app or online site) to save energy while away, and haveyour house warm or cool when you arrive home. The next generation of systems"learns" from your behaviors. After some number of days of yourbehaviors, and manual thermostat changes, the system learns when to lower orincrease the temperatures. If your schedule changes, you can override thesethermostat adjustments manually either at the actual thermostat or remotely ona mobile device. If your schedule is irregular, or if you have several peopleliving in the house with irregular schedules, many manual changes might berequired.

Consider thefuture generation of smart home climate control systems that will automaticallyand appropriately adjust the temperature of your house in response to yourdeparture and in anticipation of your arrival no matter how irregular yourschedule. Consider that a smart climate system should be able to incorporatesome measure of ambient outside temperature variations, as well asgeographical/regional conditions such as humidity, allergens (e.g. dust mites, pollen, mold), and airpollution levels. Also, consider the system should integrate your preferencesfor temperature (day, night, weekday, weekend) and other factors, such ashumidity and air purity levels. Finally, consider system requirements if morethan one person is living in your home or apartment (family members orroommates).

    1. To begin, assume that you live in a small home or apartment with only one thermostat (oneheating/cooling zone)
    a. Model a potential next generation smarthome climate control system. Develop an algorithm or algorithms for this systemto perform the functions described above. Discuss how your system works.
    b. Discuss the potential benefits andpossible issues with your system, and compare your system with at least twoother smart home climate control systems currently in use.
    2. Describe and discuss how you would makechanges to your system for a larger home with additional thermostats to controlseveral heating/cooling zones in the home.

    3. Write aone-page non-technical News Release describing your new system.

    Glossary:
allergens - substances that cause allergic reactions
app - an application; a small specializedprogram used on mobile electronic devices
news release - a statement prepared for release to thepublic or press
online - available by means of a computer over anetwork
smart home system - an automation system used within aresidence to control any combination of electronically connected items such aslighting, heating, air conditioning, security, appliances, and audio-visualequipment remotely
