MCM: The Mathematical Contest in Modeling ICM: The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling

Online Registration

Use this online registration system to register teams for MCM (and ICM) 2005 . Any team who wishes to participate in the contest must register via this online system no later than 2pm EST on Thursday February 3, 2005 . Registration should be done by the team's advisor.

If you are a team advisor who has already registered a team for MCM 2005 and you would like to register an additional team, go to Advisor Login and enter the email address and password that you used when you registered your first team. Once you've logged in to the system you will have an opportunity to register another team.

If you are a team advisor and you have not previsously registered a team for this year's MCM (registration in previous years does not count), enter your email address in the box below and click on the Continue Reigistration button.

Important: There is a $ 45 registration fee for each team to participate in MCM (and ICM) this year, which you will need to pay with a credit card during this onlne signup process. Please have your credit card ready when you begin the registration process.

MCM is a contest where teams of undergraduates use mathematical modeling to present their solutions to real world problems.

MCM will take place February 3--7, 2005(阴历12月25-29日，30的前一天结束) . Advisors can register teams online now. Note that we have made a number of changes in the contest policy and registration process since last year; all advisors should read the registration instructions and contest rules thoroughly.

ICM, the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling, is a part of MCM. Advisors wishing to register a team for ICM should register for MCM via this web site, and should choose "problem C" when selecting the problem for their team to solve.

Frequently Asked Questions About MCM and ICM

How many teams can an institution sponsor?

The MCM contest allows up to four teams per institution, with a maximum of two teams per department. The ICM contest allows up to three teams per institution.

How many teams can an advisor sponsor?

An advisor can sponsor two teams.

Can a student with an associate's degree participate?

Yes, if they are currently enrolled in a four-year institution. A Bachelor抯 degree or above is not allowed.

Is the registration fee $45 per team or $45 per institution?

$45 per team.

Can I use a school purchase order to pay the registration fee?

No, registration fees are only payable online via Visa or MasterCard.

Can teams participate without paying the registration fee?

No.

When do the team members need to be named?

Team members can be named up to 2pm EST on Thursday February 3, 2005.

Where and when do we find the problems?

Problems will be posted at the MCM web site at http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contest/mcm at 8pm EST on Thursday February 3, 2005. In case you can not access this site they will be also posted on a mirror site at http://mirror.comap.com/mcm.

How many copies of the solution paper must be submitted?

Three copies of the solution paper with the summary sheet attached must be submitted.

How important is the summary sheet?

The summary sheet is very important. It is unlikely the judges will read much beyond a poorly constructed summary.

Can teams send a disk?

No. The judges only review paper material. Even if disks are sent they are not reviewed.

When must we mail the solution papers?

Papers should be mailed in time to arrive at COMAP no later than 5 pm on Wednesday February 16, 2005. COMAP cannot reply to queries as to the status a paper's arrival. We recommend that papers be sent via a carrier that allows packages to be tracked. Advisors can also login to the MCM web site to verify that COMAP has received their team's paper.

Who are the judges?

The judges are mathematicians, math educators, and others who are in fields directly related to mathematics.

What are the judging criteria?

Please look at the Contest website under Teams prepare solutions. A list of guidelines details what the judges are looking for.

When will the contest results be available?

They will be available by March 31, 2005 and will be posted on the website.
