Nowadays it is never surprise to see a primary student, even a kingergarton boy, hanging big, heavy schoolbag and wearing a pair of thick glasses. And it seemly a common sense that basic education equal to only Chinese, science and verbal. Actually, education should not be like this. As far as I am concerned, I totally agree that children's basic education should contain subjects such as art, music, and drama.
Genuine education, as Socrates stated more than two thousand years ago, is not inserting the stuffing of information into a person, but rather eliciting knowledge from him; it is the drawing out of what is in the mind. So, the education should inspire children to find what they are fond of in stead of ** them two-legged bookcase that is what the exam-oriented style is doing.
Moreover, many giants were interested in and had attainments in arts. For example, Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists in history, said in letters he liked Johann Sebastian Bach's and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart whose music helped him calm down and think more efficiently. And many music editors would ask for his views before their work.
So, all in all, children need not only science and verbal, but also need art, music and drama. |
